Fee: $400 for members; $500 for non-members—Limited Enrollment

Mary Minifie is a professional portrait painter and modern master of the Boston School tradition. She attended Wellesley College, Boston University School of Fine Arts graduate school in painting and spent many years studying classical portraiture with Boston School painter Paul Ingbretson. She is represented by Vose Galleries, Boston; The Guild of Boston Artists, Boston; Portraits North, Lexington, MA; Portraits, Inc, New York; Portrait Brokers of America, Birmingham.
The 3 day workshop will be divided into 2 sessions each day and will focus on painting a model from life in natural light. Emphasis will be on the beauty of the flesh color notes in the natural light and understanding the form of the head. The workshop will begin with setting up a live model with good light and color, finding a composition with interesting clothing and creating a small color study of the whole painting in preparation for the finished work and also suitable for presenting to clients when a commission is underway. The next five sessions will include a demo by Mary Minifie and painting time. During the course of the three days there will be a lecture on the problems and difficulties of creating a portrait commission. This lecture will focus on creating an effective portrait composition starting with the client, their wishes and the reason for the portrait. She will take a few of her own commissions and relate from beginning to end how she found a suitable idea and worked through the various problems inherent in each situation. The process begins with meeting the person, forming your vision of that person and finding the visual means to express that vision. Principles of composition will also be discussed. The end goal is that both you and the client will be happy!
The workshop concludes with a final critique session which can include work not done in the workshop.
