![]() Elaine WentworthPrimarily a watercolorist, Elaine Wentworth also works in oils and acrylics. In her landscapes and marine paintings she tries to capture the elusive spirit of the changing seasons and atmospheric conditions, based on a foundation of strong design concepts. Whatever, the subject she finds inspiration in both broad vistas and intimate close-ups of nature. After graduating from high school in 1942 in Denver, Colorado, Elaine was employed in a wartime office and attended night art classes. During the last year of the war she worked as a radio-phone operator for the USASC, Alaska Communications System, in Ketchikan, Alaska. Years after her experience in Alaska, she wrote Mission to Metlakatla (published by Houghton Mifflin Co in Boston in 1968) about her visits to the Tsimshian Indian Village. In 1950 Elaine graduated from the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts in 1950. She worked as a fashion illustrator and also painted in her spare time. She also taught watercolor privately and conducted workshops and demonstrations for art associations in the area. The artist has won several awards and medals for her work in both regional and national competitions, including the Gold Medal of Honor at the 100th Anniversary Exhibition of the New England Watercolor Society. Her work may be found in museum and corporate collections such as the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine. Her memberships include American Watercolor Society, New England Watercolor Society, The Guild of Boston Artists, and Oil Painters of America. She is listed in Who's Who in American Art. She and her late husband Murray Wentworth, NA, co-authored Watercolor for All Seasons (North Light, 1984). Some of her paintings are included in Best of Watercolor, Painting Textures and A Gallery of Marine Painting.Elaine's work was represented by the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C., in a tour of original book illustrations called Brave Little Girls.
